The narrow coastal strip of the Liguria region delights with mountains and sea on the Gulf of Genoa. Liguria offers many cultural treasures such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Cinque Terre as well as important cities such as the capital Genoa, the VIP resort of Portofino and San Remo, which is near the French border.
Things to know about the coastal region of Liguria in northern Italy
The coastal region of Liguria, Italian “Liguria”, stretches along the north-west Italian coast and is the third smallest of 20 Italian regions. It borders France to the west, Piedmont to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the northeast and Tuscany to the southeast. In the southwest, it borders directly on the Ligurian Sea (northern Mediterranean). In the northeast, the mountain ranges of the Alps and the Apennines border it and it has always been divided into the “Riviera di Ponente” in the west and the “Riviera di Levante” in the east.
The regional capital Genoa forms the geographical centre of the two halves of the region and was the European Capital of Culture in 2004. In the past decades, the economic focus has shifted toward services, trade and tourism. But branches of agriculture, fishing and various industries are also represented.
