Summer sports in the mountains
The most popular adventure sports in South Tyrol are canyoning, rafting, paragliding and hang gliding – with an upward trend. But the region also offers fishing and swimming, which are allowed in the many clear waters in the Dolomites. However, you should be prepared for temperatures below 20° C.
Cycling and mountain biking are the most popular sports in South Tyrol alongside hiking. Especially the large Dolomite roads around the Sella and the Stilfser Joch are first-class destinations for racing cyclists. Since 2017, the “Dolomites Vives” initiative supported by Reinhold Messner has made it possible to close the Sella Pass to motorised traffic in July and August.
There are also many relaxed valley cycle paths, such as from San Candido to Lienz, in the Wipptal and Eisacktal valleys, in the Pulstertal valley, in the Vinschgau valley and between Bolzano and Trento, as well as from Bolzano to Caldaro. You can take your bike everywhere in South Tyrol on buses and trains. This means that you can go on even longer cycling excursions without your own car!
Mountain hikers, mountaineers, tourers, classic climbers and free climbers will all find the right summit in South Tyrol. A well-marked network of paths and many natural climbing gardens offer a lot of variety. The refuges are very close together in the Dolomites. Only in the Central Alps do you have to reckon with longer trails. However, the Ortler group and the border ridge with Austria are reserved for high-alpine mountaineers with glacier equipment.
Wintersports in the South Tyrolean Dolomites
In the Dolomites, the winter season is increasingly becoming the actual peak season; for February, the region is booked well in advance. The mountain railways and slopes of the eastern part are combined in the “Dolomiti Superski” association.
The world’s largest lift and piste network comprises around 450 lifts and 1,200 pistes, all of which can be used with one ski pass. Some of the runs are even among the fastest, most interesting and most popular in the world, like the Gran Risa in Stern.
Names like Selva, Ortisei, Stern, Bressanone/Brixen/Plose, Plan de Corones and Cortina d’Ampezzo in nearby Belluno in the neighbouring Veneto region make the hearts of winter sports enthusiasts beat faster! The popular Sella Ronda is also suitable for amateur skiers. The cross-country skiing possibilities are also varied.
Also popular is the traditional Böcklfahren, which children in the Pustertal valley in Olang invented after the Second World War to get to school faster. You can imagine this as a kind of monoski with a seat structure that can reach up to 100 km/h! In the meantime, there are many followers and since 2005 even world championships in Böckl skiing have been held.
In recent years, snowshoeing and winter hiking have also become increasingly popular. In all regions, there are now well-developed winter hiking trail networks and guided snowshoe hikes of varying degrees of difficulty. Incidentally, beautiful winter hikes can also be done without snow. In the mostly snow-free areas of the Merano countryside, the Unterland and lower Vinschgau with beautiful Waalwanderungen, along the centuries-old irrigation channels that are still used for agriculture today.
