The Natural Park of the Monti Sibillini and Lago di Pilato
The impressive mountain world has been under nature protection since 1993 in the “Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini”. The park includes around 20 two-thousand-metre peaks and 18 municipalities. Monte Vettore in the southeast is the highest peak in the mountain region at 2,476 metres. Near Castellúccio you come across the impressive plains of Piano Grande and Piano Perduto, which formed a huge lake during the last ice age. In the north of the Monti Sibillini, many ski areas are well-known and popular throughout central Italy.
Another highlight is the legendary Lago Pilato at 1,945 m above sea level, which was named after Pontius Pilatius. According to the stories, his body was dumped here. In the 12th century, it was even believed that the devil lived near the lake and talked to people. For this reason, the lake became a pilgrimage destination for occultists until church leaders built a wall around the glacial lake to prevent access to it.
The most beautiful villages of the Sibillini Mountains
XThe pretty spa town of Sarnano lies at an altitude of 539 m and is close to the Sassotetto ski area. In the newer part of the town are the thermal springs. You enter the old Borgo through the 15th-century Porta di Brunforte and immediately think that time has stood still here. The Palazzo Communale and the Palazzo Podestà, the Torre Civica and the 13th century Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta at the highest point of the town are worth a visit.
The neighbouring San Ginesio can even call itself one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”. The medieval village offers an extraordinarily beautiful panorama of the Sibillini mountains thanks to its exposed position at 690 metres. It is not entirely without reason that it calls itself the “Balcony of the Sibillini”. Within the well-preserved city walls, one comes across a total of eleven churches and monasteries, as well as the well-preserved city walls. At the “Piazza Gentili,” you can marvel at the Gothic “Collegiata” from the 11th century.
