THE EGADI ISLANDS
The paradisiac islands lie offshore the coast of the western coast of Sicily at Trapani and Marsala. The three islands of the island group are Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo. All of them are inhabited and dazzle with its picturesque landscapes and evidence of their past.
The historic highlights of the Egadi Islands
On the islands, Favignana and Levanzo, which are the largest and the smallest islands, Neolithic cave paintings were discovered in 1949. Most of them can be seen in the Grotta del Genovese on Levanzo. They show paintings of the former everyday life, like fishing, livestock farming, and dancing.
The beautiful islands Favignana, Levanzo und Marettimo
The island Favignana is also called “La Farfalla” because its form resembles a butterfly. It is the largest and most important of the islands. Many bays, like the popular Cala Rossa, dazzle with crystal-clear turquoise water, attracting many bathing tourists and divers. You can visit numerous sea caves, like the Grotta Azzurra, the Grotta dei Sospiri, also called the “sighing” grotto or the grotto of lovers, the Grotta dei Innamorati. The capital Favignana is dominated by the mighty fortress Santa Caterina, which once was a guard tower of the Arabs and was later rebuilt to a prison.
Levanzo dazzles with its beautiful hilly landscapes and its dramatic craggy coastline, broken by lovely sandy beaches.
On an excellent hiking tour or a boat trip, you can perfectly relax and forget the hectic city life. The above mentioned Grotta del Genovese is the main attraction of the island.
The third island Marettimo lies about 28km away from the coast of Trapani and is almost untouched. The steep limestone cliffs of the coastline and the mountainous interior of the island offer spectacular panoramic views. You can visit the Grotta del Cammello on an island tour, where you can discover the remains of a Roman settlement. And, of course, you can enjoy delicious fish specialties in one of the authentic restaurants.
