In 1981, It became a nature reserve, after the “Zingaro” was partially opened to a coastal road in 1976. The construction was stopped and this part of Sicily became to one of the most beautiful areas on the island. The reserve attracts hikers, bathers, and divers and offers silence and relaxation in the summer months, when the beaches and cities of Sicily are overrun.

The impressive coastline with its craggy and steep cliffs and sea caves was formed by the wind and the sea. It dazzles with bays of pebble beaches and crystal clear, turquoise water, and its untouched landscapes, like craggy limestone rocks, as the Monte Speziale, high cliffs and steppe-like areas. But on closer inspection you can discover a large plant diversity, which is perfectly adapted to its environment!

Around 700 different plant types grow in this area. A special type is the Mediterranean fan plant, the Chamareops, the only domestic palm in Europe.
