Festivals in Piedmont
The traditional “Palio di Asti”
Every third Sunday in September, the annually traditional “Palio di Asti” takes place on the Piazza Alfieri in Asti. It is deeply rooted in the traditions of the wine village and already takes places since 1275. It is a competition between the individual communities and villages of the area, and is a horse race without saddles. The 21 horses represent each of the villages and communities who take part.
It is the oldest competition of this type in Italy, and the village is decorated with colourful flags and decorations, already many days before the race starts. At the day of the race, a beautiful historic street parade through the alleys of the old town takes place. More than 1,200 participants from Asti and the surrounding communities represent the medieval history from Asti on this parade. The competition starts every year with the Palio of the flag-wavers, the “sbandieratori”, training races on the Piazza Alfieri and a large flea market. Once, the festivities of the Palio took almost one complete year!
