LAGO DI GARDA - THE GARDA LAKE
The famous holiday destination dazzles with its picturesque atmosphere, beautiful landscapes, and the mild climate. The spectacular eastern lakeshore of the largest lake in the pre-alps lies in the province Verona in Venetia and offers picturesque villages along the mountain massif of the Monte Baldo, which reaches an altitude of 2,000m.
The beautiful landscapes surrounding the Garda lake
Its steep slopes are full of endless olive groves; therefore, the eastern lakeshore is also called “Riviera degli Olivi.” Up on the mountain ridge, you can enjoy spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding mountain chains. You should not miss a ride with the cableway to the Tratto Spino!
The whole eastern part of the Lago di Garda is developed, and from the steep-sided north to the plain south you can find wonderful villages along the lakeshore. The riverside road Gardesana Orientale runs along the whole lake nearby the water and invites for stops at the beautiful beaches.
Surfing, hiking, and bathing in the northern part of the Lake Garda
The north offers optimal conditions for wind surfing, especially around the villages Torbole and Malcésine. The small village Torbole is even meant to be the wind surfing hotspot in Europe! Although the village has only a handful of houses, everything is aimed at surfers. This spot is also popular for mountain bikers, to discover the surrounding mountains. Malcésine is one of the most beautiful villages of the lake and dazzles with its proud Scaliger castle, narrow alleys in the old town, small squares.
Further south, you will reach the picturesque peninsula Val di Sogno with two islands offshore and lots of camping sites, hotels, and guest houses. Passing the villages Cassone, Assenza, Magugnano, and Castelletto you will reach Torri del Benaco. The old Langobard fortress town attracts with its picturesque main alleyway and a wide pedestrian promenade. The landmark of the village is the Scaliger castle nearby the harbour basin, which hosts a museum.
The scenic pearls Garda & Bardolino
Passing the green headland Punta San Viglio with the beautiful Parco Baia delle Sirene, you will reach Garda. The slopes of the hinterland are covered with a lush Mediterranean vegetation of cypresses and olives. The village itself dazzles with its ideal location in a picturesque bay and one of the most beautiful promenades of the lake. In several Cafés, restaurants and “Gelateria” you can enjoy Italian delicacies and the beautiful view. The bathing conditions are perfect as well – the long sandy beach stretches to Bardolino!
The picturesque village Bardolino is the touristic centre of the southern east lake shore. Here, you will find beautiful beaches and a wide promenade, extending between two peninsulas, where you can enjoy a bike ride along the lake shore to Garda. The historic centre of the village invites you to pleasant walks on the wide, orthogonal alleys.
The hilly hinterland is full of vineyards, where the famous Bardolino wine is produced, and on the narrow Strada del Vino you can enjoy a stroll through the colourful fields. Going south, you will reach the village Lazise, which old town is one of the most beautiful of the lake. Its narrow harbour basin stretches far into the village and the Roman church San Nicolò from the 12th century right at the harbour dazzles with impressing frescoes. The wide promenade offers much space for a walk, and the southern beach invites you to relax and enjoy the sun.
The popular village Sirmione
Passing the busy village Peschiera del Garda with its mighty fortress, you will reach Sirmione, one of the most visited spots at the lake. In the high season, more than 10,000 visitors are counted! It lies picturesque at the end of a peninsula, which extends wide into the lake. The lovely arrayed old town with its cobbled alleys invites you for a pleasant stroll.
The entry to the “Centro Storico,” the historic old town, is an impressing castle, on which walls you can take a rest with a spectacular view of the Lake Garda. Behind the old town, you will find flowering gardens, and the ruins of a palatial villa, the so-called “Grottos of Catuli.” In the western part, you will reach one of the two large thermal spas of Sirmione. The hot sulphur springs rise in 350m from the lakeshore in a depth of 19m.
