OF CALABRIA

The southern Italian region of Calabria is the tip of the Italian boot-shaped peninsula. To the north, the 1.5 million ha region borders on the Basilicata region, to the east on the Ionian Sea and to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the southwest, the Strait of Messina separates Calabria from the Mediterranean island of Sicily.

The five provinces of the region are the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, the southernmost. Northwest is the smallest province Vibo Valentina and north-east the provinces Catanzaro and Crotone. The northernmost province is Cosenza. The regional capital Catanzaro is located in the province of the same name.

The variety of landscapes brings with it several climatic zones. The Tyrrhenian Sea has a subtropical climate with little rainfall in winter. The Ionian Sea brings a hot, dry and low precipitation climate. In the altitudes of the mountain ranges, which run through the entire region, there is a significantly cooler climate and in the winter months snow falls down to 1,200 m. Around 320 sunny days a year make it one of the sunniest regions in Europe!
