The Emilia-Romagna lies in the northern part of Middle Italy and is a junction between Northern and Southern Italy. The diverse region is one of the most fertile and profitable, and therefore on of the wealthiest regions of Italy.

In the north of the 22,123km² large region, the river Po and the Italian regions Venetia and Lombardy border. In the south, it has part of the Apennine mountains and borders the regions Tuscany and the Marches, as well as the small republic San Marino. In the west, it is Liguria and the Piedmont.
The eastern part opens to the Adriatic Sea, which is responsible for the mild Mediterranean climate in the whole coastal area.
The capital Bologna in the eponymous province lies at the foot of the Apennines. It has about 390,000 inhabitants and is home to Europe’s oldest university. It is a significant national transport hub.
