BEST TRAVEL TIME IN ITALY

For many people, Italy is the epitome of Mediterranean summer holidays. But you can travel to Italy throughout the entire year!

Whatever your travel wishes are – Italy offers everything from city trips, hiking tours in the mountains and nature reserves, bathing and water sports at the wonderful coastlines, to winter holidays in beautiful ski resorts.

The climatic variety of the Italian peninsula

Due to the elongated form of the “Italian boot”, it offers a large variety of landscapes and climatic conditions. At the coasts of the Ionian and Adriatic Sea, the summers are hot and long and the winters mild and dry. Especially from May to September, the water temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea are perfect for bathing. The further south you go, the hotter it gets. The climate in Sicily is almost African and the warm desert wind Scirocco brings temperatures up to 40° Celsius.

The plain Po delta stretches from the Northern Italian regions Emilia-Romagna and Venetia to the Adriatic Sea, which favours the mild climate in this area. The winters are mild and humid and the summer temperatures are high. The region is very fertile and productive, especially rice is cultivated here. In the spring and autumn time, the fantastic nature of the nature reserve “Parco del Delta del Po” invites you to hike and bicycle tours or boat rides along the lagoon landscape.

The mild temperatures in spring, when everything is flourishing and turning to green, offer the perfect weather for city trips. The big cities like Rome, Florence, Bologna, Milano or Turin may be very hot in the summer. The autumn also comes with mild temperatures and a pleasantly warm light.

In the mountain ranges of the Alps in the north and the Apennines, stretching from the north-west to the Adriatic Sea, the climate is harsher. Long winters and short summers favour fantastic ski resorts, especially in the Alps. In Abruzzo, where the Apennines reach up to 2,912 m with the “Gran Sasso d’Italia”, you can also find wonderful ski areas. You can even go skiing and snowboarding along the slopes of the volcano Etna in Sicily, the tallest active volcano in Europe, despite the proximity to Africa!
