Going south, the steep cliffs form many sea caves and bays. The Ionian Sea dazzles with endless sandy beaches and crystal-clear water.

The landscape of the Salento shows two faces; north west from the provincial capital Lecce, the fertile plains of the Tavoliere di Lecce stretches to the Valle d’Itria. This area is committed to agriculture, especially wine growing. South from Lecce stretches the karstic plateau of the Murge Salentine with a lush green stone landscape. The architecture in the Salento area is different to the rest of Apulia; the traditional houses of the inhabitants are built in Greek style with whitewashed walls and flat roofs.
