The area of the Salento is the most southern region of Apulia and forms the heel of the Italian “boot”. It is also called Terra d’Otranto, and is rising to a famous and varied holiday destination.

The highlights of the Salentine peninsula

The most beautiful sections lie between the coastal paradises around Otranto and Gallipoli at the Adriatic Sea. North from Otranto, you will find one of the cleanest shore areas in Italy! Going south, the steep cliffs form many sea caves and bays. The Ionian Sea dazzles with endless sandy beaches and crystal-clear water.

The landscape of the Salento shows two faces; north west from the provincial capital Lecce, the fertile plains of the Tavoliere di Lecce stretches to the Valle d’Itria. This area is committed to agriculture, especially wine growing. South from Lecce stretches the karstic plateau of the Murge Salentine with a lush green stone landscape. The architecture in the Salento area is different to the rest of Apulia; the traditional houses of the inhabitants are built in Greek style with whitewashed walls and flat roofs.

The provincial capital Lecce & Galatina

The city of Lecce is also known as the “Florence of the south” and dazzles with numerous monuments and buildings, made of the “pietra leccese”, which characterize the city image of Lecce inimitably in the famous Lecce Baroque style.

The golden-yellow soft tufa rock is quarried in the surrounding area of Lecce. One of the most significant examples of this special Baroque style is the Basilica di Santa Croce with its richly decorated façade.

Going further south from Lecce, you will reach Galatina, which is surrounded by a famous wine growing region, where the “Galatina bianco” and “Galatina rosso” are produced and sold. But Galatina does not only offer excellent wines; the historical old town dazzles with prestigious buildings, like the Basilica di Santa Caterine d’Alessandria from the 14th century or the Baroque style church Chiesa Matrice.
