ITALY'S SKI RESORTS -
SUN, SKIING AND DELICIOUS FOOD

Italy's ski resorts are mainly located in the northern parts of the two major mountain regions of the Alps and the Dolomites. But also further south, in Abruzzo, you will find popular ski slopes; and you can indulge in the delights of snow even on Europe's largest active volcano, Etna.

The top ski-resorts in Northern Italy

In the Dolomites in South Tyrol, around 1200 km of slopes between 1500m and 3200m altitude are waiting for experts and connoisseurs. Here twelve ski areas have joined together to form the Dolomiti Superski ski region – so you can enjoy incomparable snow fun with just one ski pass. The Dolomites region is thus one of the largest interconnected ski areas in the world.

The individual ski areas in the Dolomites are Cortina d’Ampezzo, Kronplatz, Alta Badia, Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Arabba, Alta Pusteria, Valle di Fiemme, San Martino di Castrozza, Eisacktal, Travalli-Moena and Civetta.

In the southern part of Trentino, eight other villages of the Dolomites have joined together to form the Skirama Dolomiti. These include Madonna di Campiglio, Pinzolo, Folgarida-Marilleva, Pejo, Tonate, Andalo, Monte Bondone and Folgaria. Here 360 km of slopes and 140 lifts leave nothing to be desired for winter sports enthusiasts of all levels!

Bormio is one of the most famous ski resorts in Lombardy. After the magic of the slopes, the mountain town with its winding alleys really rounds off! During the day the 50km piste offers a lot of variety and probably one of the most difficult downhill runs in the Ski World Cup. Livigno near the Swiss border is popular with boarders from all over the world because of Italy’s largest snowpark.

The Via Lattea ski area in Piedmont consists of 400 km of slopes and around 140 different slopes. It includes the villages of Sestriere, Sauze d’Ouix, Claviere, Cesana, Sansicario, Pragelato and Monginevro. Sestriere has earned itself an excellent international reputation as a venue for World Championships, World Cup races and the 2006 Olympic Games. But you can also experience fantastic skiing adventures in the other villages. Sauze d’Ouix, one of the larger ski resorts, is very popular with the locals and known for its lively après-ski scene. The village of Claviere is Italy’s oldest ski resort and has retained its rustic Italian charm. The Via Lattea ski area is also easily accessible from Turin airport.

Close to the French border is the Bardonecchia ski area. With 140km of slopes, it is perfect for beginners and moderately advanced skiers and boarders.

The top ski-resorts in Central and Southern Italy

The mountains of Abruzzo in central Italy also offer many winter sports opportunities – less than an hour’s drive from the coast! Gran Sasso Teramano is one of the most beautiful Abruzzo winter sports resorts with a view of the Teramer coast. Prati di Tivo is one of the most famous ski resorts in the area. From here you can also explore the Abruzzo wildlife and old villages such as Pietracamela, which is one of the “most beautiful villages in Italy”.

Other ski areas can be found in the Apennines. Here the peaks are not quite as high, but at an altitude of up to 1400m the ski villages offer a tranquil winter holiday. Abetone is particularly popular with local skiers. Here you can combine your skiing holiday with sightseeing, as it is only a short distance from Florence, Pisa and Lucca.

And even the largest active volcano in Europe on Sicily offers two ski areas on the slopes of Etna, the Etna North (2,300m) and Etna South (2,600m) ski areas. They are among the smallest but also most spectacular ski resorts in Europe. From November to April there is enough snow in the summit area, down to 1,700m.
