The Po Delta Nature Reserve
In the Po delta, the tallest and most important river of Italy flows into the Adriatic Sea. The nature reserve “Parco regionale del Delta del Po” stretches over several provinces and is surrounded by a fascinating river and lagoon landscape. The medieval and Renaissance old towns of the cities of Ferrara, Ravenna and Modena in the Po delta, are listed as UNESCO-World-Heritage-Sites.
Castles and fortresses of Emilia-Romagna
The western part of the province Piacenza dazzles with many medieval castles in beautiful valleys. The wide plains, valleys and hills of Piacenza offer a perfect scenery for hiking tours and outdoor sports. In the province Parma, the best preserved castles and fortresses of Italy line up next each other from the Apennines to the Po delta, and invite its visitors to a magical world of knights and ancient customs!
Bologna: The heart of Emilia-Romagna
The capital of Emilia-Romagna is Bologna. It is a major junction between North and South Italy due its central position in the eponymous province. Bologna is the seventh largest city in Italy and with its brick buildings is also known as “La Rossa”. It is also site of the oldest university in Europe!
Emilia-Romagna: The land of powerful engines
The region is also named the “Terra di Motori” – the country of powerful engines. All the famous Italian sports car brands, such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and famous motorcycle manufacturers, have their roots in the Emilia-Romagna. The Italian sports cars are not just fast – they exude emotions unlike any other sports car brand! Maranello in the province Modena is the hometown of the world-known Ferrari, and there you can, of course, visit the Ferrari museum. You can also find several well-known circuits, on which Formula 1 races take place.
Culinary highlights of Emilia-Romagna
Besides the fast cars, Modena is the hometown of the famous “Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale”, the popular balsamic vinegar. It is on the A-list of the vinegar specialties! Since the 11th century it is used to refine sweet or savoury delights. The province Parma offers further delicacies, such as the delicious parmesan cheese, the “Parmigiano Reggiano”. Even in the Middle Ages it was food for the journey of pilgrims. The excellent Parma ham, “Prosciutto di Parma”, with its special flavour is protected by the EU logo since 1996. The Romans already used the climatic conditions of the region and produced the air-dried ham in Parma.
A leading wine region
Furthermore, the Emilia-Romagna is one of the most significant winegrowing regions in Italy! The winegrowing areas stretch over the whole region and 15% of the wine production in Italy come from the Emilia-Romagna. The famous red wine Lambrusco is the most produced wine and you can find excellent Lambrusco wines here.
